I believe in the power of collective action to drive change—and that caring for others, including the planet, begins with caring for yourself. I’m in the early stages of developing a new duet inspired by Jazzercise and other American dance exercise forms. This project began with a curiosity about the intersections—and tensions—between fitness culture and self-care. Influenced by the visual and cultural aesthetics of the 1980s franchise, I’m examining how it promoted certain ideals around the body, discipline, and belonging.
What started as an exploration of vanity and sameness has evolved into a broader inquiry into care—both individual and collective—and the thin line where care can slip into harm. The work considers how group movement, like that found in fitness classes, can reinforce or resist societal norms, much like collective action can either support or hinder environmental sustainability. I’m asking: When does repetition become detrimental, and when does it support growth? What does it mean to move in unison—not just physically, but socially?
This piece uses the metaphor of repetitive, disciplined movement to reflect on sustainability, exploring how internal habits and collective behaviors shape our capacity for care. Saving the planet isn’t just about external activism; it’s also about how we move, act, and care—together.
